REVISIT WASHINGTON’S WAR HEADQUARTERS TO CELEBRATE 285TH BIRTHDAY

On February 20th, 2017

Every year we Americans celebrate Washington’s Birthday on Feb 20th everywhere.

I often visit his once war operation Headquarters in Hudson Valley. I decided to jointly celebrate my birthday, and my daughter’s, though it falls on the 27th and on 17th, in order to save time and money. My second daughter joined us from NBC Universal and youngest one from law school to have a combined celebration. Dozen red roses are still blooming well in the vase scenting an air of a unique fragrance. And revisited the Headquarters of the then General Washington’s Continental Army in Newburgh, New York. The Tower of Victory symbolizes the Continental Army’s victory in the war with the British Army under the superior leadership of General George Washington in 1883. Washington arrived in Newburgh as Commander of the Continental Army and prevented the British Army from entering West Point by using logs chained together across the Hudson River. After 8 years of war with Britain, General Washington succeeded in signing a peace treaty on April 19, 1783 in his small office at the Hasbrouck House. Washington stayed for almost 16 and a half months with his wife Martha Washington at this Hudson Valley Headquarters between the years 1782 to 1783. The site, overlooking the Hudson River and Beacon Mountain became a place transforming the Revolutionary War and molding the new Republic. It is now the birthplace of historic preservation, America’s first publicly owned historic site. Imagine what if Commanding General lost the war to British Army. There would be no such great America today. Beginning with the first Republic, America became the wealthiest and strongest nation in the world with the short period of history, in comparison with 5,000 year Korean history. Today is very fine day with 60 degree in temperature, which invites so many tourists to visit this historical site. Celebration of founding father’s would-be 285th birthday includes musket and cannon firings, honoring the legacy of the first president and the museum. Visitors learned about the Continental Army’s time at the camp, where 8,000 soldiers and civilians stayed from October 1782 to June 1783. Dressed in Continental soldier uniforms trained staffers demonstrated military drilling and fighting against British soldiers with guns and bayonets. Continental Army stationed in the mountains of the Hudson Valley and led by General Washington also benefited from natural defense the valley the most important acts happened at the Temple Hill site in New Windsor after the end of War. General Washington’s famous humility was recognized by assigning a better bedroom for guests than for his own room, and also was shown by rejecting the idea that he should be king after the war.

In the reception room there is the preamble to the Declaration of Independence dated July 2, 1776 surrounded by several founding fathers: “ We hold this truth to be self-evident. That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”

In October 1777, roughly 700 American soldiers made a heroic stand against 2, 100 British and Loyalist troops attacking Forts Montgomery and Clinton. Though losing both forts, a brave American defense disrupted British plans to control the Hudson River by floating chained 15 foot logs on the river to deter the British ship from coming to West Point.
